Florida: New Update on QB Situation Before Texas Game

The Florida Gators are set to play No. 7 Texas on the road on Saturday after dealing with quarterback uncertainty this week.

The Gators have been preparing freshman quarterback Tramell Jones Jr. to play against the Longhorns this week after Aaron Philo suffered an injury in the team's 38-19 loss to South Carolina last week.

On Thursday, news came out that Philo was set to travel with the Gators to Austin, where he would be a game-time decision. Per Pete Nakos of On3, Jones is now expected to be the starter against Texas, though a final decision will be made before kickoff.

Philo, a transfer from Georgia Tech, has thrown for 1,341 yards, nine touchdowns, and three interceptions this season. Through the first six games of the season, Jones has gone 23 of 29 passing for 252 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions.

Philo and Jones had a quarterback battle last through training camp, with Philo earning the job in part because of his familiarity with offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner when the two worked together at Georgia Tech.

If Jones starts, he will face a challenge against one of the best defenses in college football.

The running game has not been efficient in the last two games for Florida, which put pressure on Philo to make plays to lead the offense. Jones could be in a similar situation against the Longhorns in Austin on Saturday.

The Florida Gators are trying to save their season.

The Gators looked like a College Football Playoff contender in the month of September, with their crowning achievement coming in a 52-28 blowout of then-No. 4 Ole Miss at "The Swamp."

Since then, Florida has been blown out by Mizzou and South Carolina, falling to 4-2 before playing Texas.

The idea of Florida making the CFP isn't over, but it's on life support this weekend. The Gators have an opportunity to save their season and stay in the CFP race by upsetting Texas on the road.

The Gators have a bye next week before playing No. 1 Georgia on Halloween. If UF defeats the Longhorns or Bulldogs, the program has a chance of making an at-large bid by winning out and having a 9-3 record. Wins over Ole Miss and either Georgia or Texas would be strong for UF's resume.

For that to happen, Jones will have to limit turnovers and the secondary will need to play the best it has this season.
