Washington football finally claimed its first Big Ten win of the 2026 season despite playing without Demond Williams. Jedd Fisch’s team battled through a chaotic five-turnover performance to defeat the Purdue Boilermakers 38-26 on Friday night at Ross-Ade Stadium, and the head coach made sure to praise his players and coaching staff for their determination and effort.
During the postgame press conference, Fisch described the game as an unusual and challenging game but praised how hard his players competed throughout the night.
“Interesting game,” Fisch said. “But I thought that our guys played so hard today, and I just want to give so much credit to our coaching staff, to our players, to really the way our kids all face it is just they wanted it so bad.

“They just wanted it so bad, and you felt it. You felt it all week. You felt it how we practiced. You felt it when you’re in the locker room. There was no flinch, even when you got to the point where you know we turned the ball up for the first play of the game.”
Quarterback Elijah Brown started against Purdue as Williams continued to deal with a rib injury which he sustained during Washington’s game against Iowa. Brown made the most of his opportunity, completing 21 of 27 passes for 302 yards and three touchdowns. His performance helped the Huskies accumulate 488 total yards despite their costly turnovers.
Running back Trey Cooley also played a significant role in Washington’s offensive success. He led the Huskies’ ground attack with 113 rushing yards and a touchdown on just eight carries.
Purdue entered Friday night’s game riding a two-game winning streak but failed to extend its run against Washington. The Huskies improved to 4-3 overall and 1-3 in Big Ten play with the victory, while the Boilermakers fell to 3-4 on the season.
Washington will now head into its bye week before returning to action against Nebraska on October 31.
