Two days before Auburn stunned No. 1 Georgia 27-24 on Saturday, Alex Golesh’s son, Bear, had a question about the postgame plans. The way he asked it assumed Auburn would win.
The unranked Tigers came back from a 14-0 deficit at Sanford Stadium and watched Georgia tie the game with 2:58 left. Then they recovered a Gunner Stockton fumble and won on Alex McPherson’s 34-yard field goal with two seconds remaining. Afterward, Golesh, the first-year head coach, brought Bear down to the field and tried to put the day into words.
Alex Golesh Retells Son’s Question as Fans Praise the Boy’s Faith
“Bear said Thursday, he said, ‘Dad … can I get on the field after we win?’ We’re on the field, bro,” an emotional Golesh told ESPN’s Taylor McGregor in his postgame interview.

ESPN posted the clip and gave the boy the credit in its caption, saying Golesh’s son “never had a doubt” about his dad and Auburn pulling off the upset.
Fans answering ESPN’s post picked up on that certainty. One fan zeroed in on a single word: “That little ‘we’ is everything, kids really believe in their dads like that.”
Another fan had a job in mind for him: “The kid had more faith than every analyst on TV this week. Give him a headset next Saturday.”
A third fan kept it short: “Faith in Dad, a victory to remember!”
Golesh Asks Auburn Tigers Fans to Stick With the Rebuild
Golesh’s answer didn’t stop at his son. He thanked his players, his coaches, and a fan base he said had been through a lot, then laid out where he wants the program to go.
“We’re going to build Auburn back to where everybody wants it. One game at a time, just hang with us. This locker room, these dudes that chose to stay: that’s what it’s all about.”
Recent history had not been on Auburn’s side. According to The Associated Press, Georgia had won nine straight in the series going into Saturday, a run that began with the 2017 SEC championship game. WSB-TV noted that Georgia’s loss also ended a 93-game winning streak for No. 1 AP teams at home against unranked opponents.

When McGregor asked what had him so emotional, Golesh said he was proud of his players and grateful to everyone who had stayed with the program. Then he named two men from Auburn’s past.
“Takeo Spikes texted me this morning. Jason Campbell texted me Tuesday. These guys whose shoulders we stand on that built Auburn into what it is supposed to be. Just hang with us. Just hang with us. Just hang with us.”
