SEC Power Rankings Week 8

College football’s Week 7 had to be one of the wildest weeks in recent history, with upsets taking place across the country.

The last time Texas, Georgia, and Alabama all lost on the same day was in 1996. No. 7 Texas fell to Florida, 27-24, at home. No. 1 Georgia also lost at home by the same score to Auburn, while Alabama suffered a 26-10 road loss to Tennessee.

It was also the first time since 1990 that the No. 1 team in the country lost in back-to-back weeks. Meanwhile, No. 5 Indiana fell to No. 4 Ohio State, 19-15, snapping its 22-game winning streak and suffering its first loss in 666 days.

Among other thrillers, No. 3 Miami (FL) defeated Florida State, 43-35, in double overtime, while No. 8 BYU escaped with a 28-22 victory over No. 2 Notre Dame at home. Safe to say, Week 7 made history.

As for No. 15 Kentucky, the Wildcats started hot against Oklahoma, scoring on their opening drive to take a 7-0 lead. However, both the offense and defense struggled for much of the game before the defense came through with several critical stops in the fourth quarter. Kentucky forced four turnovers, including a pick-six and another interception that helped set up a touchdown, to secure a 21-13 upset victory in Norman.

With all of that in mind, let’s get into the rankings.

SEC Football Power Rankings Week 8

No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs (6-1, 4-1)

Despite a heartbreaking 27-24 loss to Auburn at home, Georgia remains at No. 1 in the SEC Power Rankings. The Bulldogs have looked like one of the conference’s best teams throughout the season, recording several blowout victories and defeating Alabama last week. Although the loss to Auburn was a tough one to swallow, Georgia has shown enough to maintain the top spot.

No. 2 Ole Miss Rebels (5-1, 3-1)

Ole Miss moves all the way up to No. 2 after blowing out Missouri, 31-3, at home. The Tigers had entered the matchup with just one loss, making the Rebels’ dominant performance even more impressive. Despite their own loss to Florida, which came after an emotional victory over LSU the previous week and without star running back Kewan Lacy, Ole Miss continues to show why it is one of the best teams in the SEC.

No. 3 Tennessee Volunteers (6-1, 3-1)

For a team that has struggled offensively for much of the season, Tennessee finally put everything together against Alabama, earning a 26-10 victory at home. Quarterback George MacIntyre appears to have taken control of the starting job and threw for nearly 200 yards. Meanwhile, star running back DeSean Bishop delivered another outstanding performance, finishing with 32 carries for 159 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

If Tennessee can continue to find its rhythm offensively, the Volunteers could become a dangerous team in the SEC.

No. 4 Kentucky Wildcats (6-1, 4-1)

Kentucky continues to prove that it is the real deal in the SEC under first-year head coach Will Stein. Few people expected the Wildcats to reach six wins this early in the season, but they are now bowl-eligible and pushing for a spot in the College Football Playoff.

Kentucky took care of business in Norman, upsetting Oklahoma, 21-13. The Wildcats’ defense deserves plenty of credit for the victory after forcing four turnovers, including a pick-six. While the defense continues to deliver in critical moments, the offense must find more consistency moving forward.

If Kentucky can put together more complete performances on both sides of the ball, this team could become a serious threat in the SEC and the College Football Playoff race.

No. 5 Alabama Crimson Tide (5-2, 3-2)

Alabama has now lost back-to-back games, falling to Georgia last week before suffering a 26-10 road loss to Tennessee. The Crimson Tide have shown how dangerous they can be on both sides of the ball, but they must find a way to execute more consistently.

With two conference losses already on the schedule, Alabama cannot afford many more setbacks if it hopes to remain in contention for the SEC Championship Game and the College Football Playoff.

No. 6 LSU Tigers (5-2, 2-2)

LSU took care of business against Mississippi State, shutting out the Bulldogs, 31-0. After a promising start to the season, Mississippi State is beginning to look like a team struggling to keep up with the SEC’s top competition, much like it did last year.

Although LSU has two losses on its record, the Tigers remain a dangerous team capable of competing with some of the best programs in the conference.

No. 7 Missouri Tigers (5-2, 2-2)

Missouri drops to No. 7 after a disappointing 31-3 loss to Ole Miss. The Tigers also suffered a narrow defeat against Mississippi State earlier in the season, but they have been competitive for much of the year.

Missouri’s 45-17 blowout victory over Florida showed what this team can accomplish when everything clicks. To remain in the upper half of the SEC, however, the Tigers will need to perform better against the conference’s top opponents.

No. 8 Florida Gators (5-2, 3-2)

After struggling over the previous couple of weeks, Florida picked up one of its biggest victories of the season by defeating Texas, 27-24, on the road.

The Gators deserve credit for taking advantage of the opportunity, but they will need to find greater consistency throughout their games if they hope to take the next step and compete with the SEC’s top teams.

No. 9 South Carolina Gamecocks (3-3, 1-3)

South Carolina is coming off a bye week after an impressive 38-19 road victory over Florida. The Gamecocks looked sharp in that matchup, delivering one of their best performances of the season.

The bye week should give South Carolina an opportunity to rest and prepare for its upcoming home matchup against Tennessee. With the Volunteers coming off a major victory over Alabama, the Gamecocks will have their work cut out for them in what could be an exciting contest.

No. 10 Texas Longhorns (4-2, 1-2)

Despite losing back-to-back games, Texas remains a team that opponents cannot afford to overlook. The Longhorns have struggled in recent weeks, and quarterback Arch Manning has not played up to expectations in those matchups.

However, Manning still has time to learn and develop as he adjusts to his role. If he can improve his consistency, Texas could get back on track and remain competitive in the SEC.

The Longhorns’ next matchup against Ole Miss at home will be a major test and should provide a clearer picture of where this team stands.

No. 11 Mississippi State Bulldogs (4-2, 2-2)

Mississippi State got off to another strong start this season in Starkville, raising hopes that the Bulldogs could build on their early success. However, tougher competition has exposed some of the team’s weaknesses.

The Bulldogs suffered a 56-23 blowout loss to Alabama before being shut out, 31-0, by LSU this week. Mississippi State must find a way to bounce back and prove that it can avoid another late-season collapse.

The talent is there, but the Bulldogs need to show they can compete consistently against the SEC’s best teams.

No. 12 Oklahoma Sooners (3-3, 1-2)

Many people believed Oklahoma had finally turned a corner after defeating Texas in the Red River Rivalry, but the Sooners were unable to carry that momentum into their home matchup against Kentucky.

Oklahoma fell 21-13 to the Wildcats, struggling to generate enough offense to secure the victory. The win over Texas had raised hopes that the Sooners had figured things out, but the loss to Kentucky showed that plenty of work remains.

Oklahoma will need to find answers offensively if it hopes to turn its season around.

No. 13 Auburn Tigers (4-2, 2-2)

Auburn shocked the college football world by defeating No. 1 Georgia, 27-24, at home. It was one of the most dramatic finishes of the season, with the Bulldogs appearing to be in position to set up a potential game-winning field goal.

Instead, quarterback Gunner Stockton fumbled the ball, allowing Auburn to recover possession. The Tigers then drove down the field and set up the game-winning field goal to complete the upset.

Auburn deserves plenty of credit for taking advantage of the opportunity, but the Tigers will face another difficult challenge when LSU comes to town. If they can build on this victory, they could become an even bigger factor in the SEC race.

No. 14 Texas A&M Aggies (4-3, 2-2)

Texas A&M continues to disappoint after entering the season with high expectations. The Aggies have struggled to generate consistent offense, and their loss to Kentucky at home was another setback for a team hoping to compete near the top of the SEC.

With LSU coming to town, Texas A&M will need to deliver a near-perfect performance to get back on track. The Aggies have the talent to compete, but they must prove they can execute when it matters most.

No. 15 Arkansas Razorbacks (3-4, 1-3)

Arkansas finally picked up an SEC victory after defeating Vanderbilt, ending a difficult stretch for the Razorbacks. The matchup came against a struggling Commodores team that has had trouble finding its footing since losing quarterback Diego Pavia.

Still, Arkansas needed the win and will hope to use it as a turning point in its season. The Razorbacks’ schedule does not get any easier, as Missouri is up next. Fortunately for Arkansas, the game will take place at home, giving the Razorbacks an opportunity to build momentum.

No. 16 Vanderbilt Commodores (3-4, 0-4)

Vanderbilt falls to the bottom of the SEC Power Rankings after losing to Arkansas. As mentioned above, this matchup presented an opportunity for either team to gain some momentum, but the Razorbacks came away with the victory.

The Commodores have struggled to maintain the success they showed earlier in the season, and the absence of quarterback Diego Pavia has been a significant storyline in their downturn. Vanderbilt must find a way to get back on track if it hopes to salvage its season.

Unfortunately for the Commodores, the schedule does not get any easier. Vanderbilt travels to Kentucky next weekend to face a Wildcats team that is already bowl-eligible and pushing for a College Football Playoff berth under Will Stein.

Kentucky has looked like a different program under its first-year head coach, and Vanderbilt will have a difficult challenge ahead as it tries to earn its first SEC victory of the season.
