Paul Finebaum jokes Michael Bratton didn’t get the ‘ESPN talking points’ after takedown of CFP expansion

Very few college football fans are happy with the decision to expand the playoff to 24 teams. But listen to any of ESPN’s top college football voices, and you’ll probably hear a more balanced perspective.
On Saturday’s episode of College GameDay, the show’s usual crew debated the merits of College Football Playoff expansion, with Kirk Herbstreit claiming that the expansion will give more teams “hope” throughout the season, but risks devaluing the regular season. Pat McAfee laid out “some positives” but also warned expansion could ruin “the power of college football” to drive huge atmospheres week after week.
Flip the dial to SEC Network, and fans might’ve seen a more unfiltered assessment of the 24-team playoff. Michael Bratton tore into playoff expansion while on the network, which caused Paul Finebaum to ask if he had failed to receive the appropriate ESPN “talking points” before the show.

“Well, [expansion] is great news for the likes of Arkansas who I think they took a giant step towards becoming a playoff program. We’re going to put half of the SEC in the playoff. …I mean, is that what we’re doing? We’re placating to the Arkansas, the Vanderbilts, the Mississippi States of the world? I think it’s disgraceful. I don’t think they consulted the players, I know they didn’t. I know they didn’t consult the fans. And I don’t know who this is for,” Bratton said before Finebaum interrupted.
“Hold up. Did you not get the ESPN talking points for this interview?” Finebaum joked.
“I don’t even know what ESPN’s getting out of it!” Bratton replied. “I mean, I get more inventory, but you’re losing a championship game. And it doesn’t seem like there’s a massive difference with the money.”
Of course, it’s ESPN’s decision to pay more for a 24-team playoff that ultimately led to the expansion. So it stands to reason that ESPN, at least from a business perspective, sees merit in the expanded postseason. But it’s encouraging to see that ESPN is willing to platform people that are truly critical of the decision. Not only was Bratton critical, but the entire College GameDay crew had at least some level of criticism towards the decision. Nick Saban cited concerns about player health when adding games. Desmond Howard noted that “we haven’t really heard from the players” on this.
So even as Finebaum jokes about ESPN distributing “talking points” about the merits of playoff expansion, it’s clear that the network is allowing room for disagreement. After all, someone has to speak to the large swaths of fans upset with this decision.
