Alabama DC Kane Wommack makes a bold claim about LSU offense that even he can't believe is true

The Alabama Crimson Tide enters its rivalry matchup against the LSU Tigers as double-digit favorites for the second time since 2022, and they were upset in that 2022 matchup, 32-31. Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer and his staff are doing everything they can to avoid a disastrous end to their sprint to the SEC title game. That includes fixing its woeful run game that has left the offense in a tough spot entering November.
Alas, how hard should it be to overcome a 5-3 LSU team that fired head coach Brian Kelly after a lopsided loss against Texas A&M? Even former Alabama and LSU head coach Nick Saban questioned how good the Tigers’ job is. Alabama is getting several key pieces back from injury early on offense and defense, too.
So, why did Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack make an over-the-top comment to praise LSU ahead of this rivalry game? We dig in below.
Alabama DC praises Garrett Nussmeier and LSU offense despite struggles
The LSU offense was supposed to be among the nation’s elite. Bringing back senior quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, sophomore running back Caden Durham, playmakers Aaron Anderson and Tre’Dez Green, and adding Barion Brown and Nic Anderson seemed foolproof. Wommack made a comment that seemed to be out of his notes from the summer, though, and not one that reflected what has happened this season.
Wommack told the media on Thursday that LSU is a “very dangerous team…They are as explosive as we have seen. This is as talented of an offensive skill group that we have seen, with a very experienced quarterback.”

The Tigers’ offense simply hasn’t taken off. Nussmeier dealt with an oblique injury for the first half of the season and saw his yards per attempt drop from 7.7 in 2024 to 6.8. The offensive line has been horrific, and Nussmeier and Durham are under constant pressure.
The receiving corps has had some good moments with Aaron Anderson and Green, but Brown and Anderson have barely been positive impacts or played. LSU’s offense ranks in the bottom half of the country in yards and points per game, defying logic that this expensive roster could be 84th out of 136th in scoring.
Despite that, Wommack believes LSU is a scary opponent. While he isn’t wrong since this is a rivalry game, Alabama is the rightful favorite. The Tide’s passing game will be tested against star secondary players like AJ Haulcy, Mansoor Delane, and DJ Pickett, but the Tigers’ run defense is ripe for attacking.
Overall, Wommack did the right thing to keep bulletin board material close to his chest. But he can’t possibly be afraid of an offense that can’t overcome a horrible offensive line.
