After Another Disaster, Matt Campbell and Penn State Are Not Considering a QB Change

Penn State's season, directly from a nightmare, continues to get worse. The Nittany Lions traveled to Michigan to take on the Wolverines, and while they competed hard, they still came up short, and it was in large part thanks to an unbalanced attack.
The Nittany Lions cannot run the football, simple as that. They rushed for just 65 yards on the day and dropped back to throw the ball 44 times in total. Their attack is as unbalanced as it comes, and that is the main reason that this team is struggling so badly.
One offshoot of that is that Rocco Becht is not a quarterback who should be dropping back that much. If they want him to be successful, he needs to max out at around 35 attempts, and even that is a little bit high.
He is not the caliber of quarterback to be relying on that much and expecting to have success.
The proof is in the play because Becht was really bad again for the Nittany Lions. He finished the day 28-for-44 for 267 yards, 1 touchdown, and 2 interceptions. It is now four straight Big Ten games where he has struggled mightily, and Penn State is still winless in the conference.
With all that being the reality, Matt Campbell is not ready to make a change at the position. After the game, he was asked about it immediately, and his response was actually a glowing endorsement of the signal caller.

Campbell loves how much he competes while saying that he has to continue to grow and be better for the Nittany Lions. While that is true, that is also part of the issue with Becht.
Becht is in his fifth year as a college quarterback and is still making young quarterback mistakes. The idea of a veteran quarterback is that he isn't having those tough miscommunications and he isn't making those young-player mistakes.
The more that things change, the more that they seem to stay exactly the same. For the last several years, the Nittany Lions have been yearning for a quarterback. They have had the big-time recruits; they have had the guys with massive hearts; they have had the player back there they have believed in. Whoever it is, they have always come up short.
Becht has been really bad for Penn State, but his leash is still there. I can't imagine that it is much longer, but for now, his head coach is sticking with him.
