Arkansas can use week off to drop the hammer on Hunter Yurachek

The fact that Arkansas football won an SEC game should not mean that the program has suddenly figured everything out or now stands on solid footing. Let's be clear: The win was really important, but it was important primarily because Arkansas avoided a worst-case scenario. Ryan Silverfield lasting only one season on the job was a real possibility if UA had lost big. Even a close loss would have been discouraging and alarming. Silverfield has earned a 2027 season with the victory, but again, that's merely the avoidance of a total disaster. It's not a sign the program is on its way up, only that it has avoided rock bottom. Silverfield should be retained, but what hasn't changed is that athletic director Hunter Yurachek still needs to be fired.

Guess what? Arkansas football doesn't play a game this week. The Hogs get a week off. There won't be any college football played by the Razorbacks for two weeks. It's time for the team to take a break. It's time for Ryan Silverfield to do recruiting.

It's time for Arkansas school administrators and leadership to fire Hunter Yurachek.

The win over Vanderbilt can't lull anyone in the upper reaches of school administration into a state of complacency or a mindset which accepts mediocrity. This is not a week in which Arkansas leaders can buy time or think that "buying time" is an acceptable posture. Just the opposite. This is a week for Arkansas to act. Fire Yurachek now. A replacement doesn't have to be brought aboard in a matter of days. Doing this now gives UA a better chance of hiring someone by late November or early December, before the transfer portal opens. Arkansas, upon firing Yurachek, could get the ball rolling in terms of interviews and contacting the agents or representation for prospective candidates. The hire could be made before the portal opens so that the football program has a chance of being able to make the necessary investments in NIL to attract top talent. The newly-hired AD, if brought aboard before the portal opens, can coordinate with Ryan Silverfield and begin the process of becoming the head coach's ally and helper.

We all know that a repair of Arkansas football begins with firing Hunter Yurachek. The off week is the time for the administration to get the gears moving and not delay any further on the restoration which absolutely needs to take place this year, not 2027.
