Michigan football is reportedly preparing for a quarterback change ahead of Saturday’s matchup against No. 6 Indiana.

The Wolverines are expected to start freshman Tommy Carr instead of Bryce Underwood in a significant shakeup at quarterback.

The reported decision follows Michigan’s 21-18 victory over Penn State, when Carr replaced Underwood at halftime.

Underwood struggled against the Nittany Lions, completing five of 11 passes for 43 yards and throwing two interceptions.

Carr helped turn the game around, leading Michigan to three second-half touchdowns and a comeback victory.

However, head coach Kyle Whittingham declined Monday to publicly name his starting quarterback against Indiana.

CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz revealed Tuesday on X, formerly Twitter, that Michigan is expected to make the switch.

Carr’s performance against Penn State appears to have strengthened his case for the starting role.

The freshman completed five of seven passes for 47 yards. He also scored on a 12-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter.

His contributions helped the team improve to 4-2 and secure its first Big Ten victory of the season.

Carr is also the grandson of former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr, who led the Wolverines to the 1997 national championship.

Meanwhile, Underwood faces uncertainty after entering the season as Michigan’s established starter.

The potential change marks a significant shift for the Wolverines’ offense ahead of another challenging Big Ten matchup this weekend.

Whittingham acknowledged Monday that the coaching staff had settled on a quarterback plan but declined to disclose its decision.

The Wolverines face a tough test against the Hoosiers, who have lost just once since the start of the 2025 season. That defeat came against Ohio State last week, making Carr’s potential first collegiate start even more challenging.

Saturday’s game at Michigan Stadium is scheduled for noon.
