Oregon, Dan Lanning Receive Unfortunate Outlook For Top 2028 QB Target

The Oregon Ducks and head coach Dan Lanning continue to face adversity as the program makes its way through the 2026 college football season.

After suffering two regular-season losses to the Oklahoma State Cowboys in Week 2 and the UCLA Bruins in Week 6, Lanning’s squad took a massive hit when star quarterback Dante Moore exited the team’s Week 4 contest against the USC Trojans with a concussion. However, Oregon’s latest dilemma may not take a toll on the current season, but rather on the future of the program.

One of the primary targets for the Ducks in the 2028 recruiting class is four-star quarterback Joisah Boyd. The California native recently revealed his commitment date for Nov 23, with Oregon as one of three teams in the mix for the talented quarterback prospect. But despite making a strong push for Boyd, the coaching staff received a brutal outlook for his decision.

Earlier this week, 247Sports’ Regional Recruiting Analyst Blair Angulo logged a crystal ball prediction for the UCLA Bruins to land Boyd, over the likes of the Kentucky Wildcats and the Ducks.

Boyd, as a steady riser in the 2028 recruiting class, has been a key target for Oregon. As of this month, Boyd is the No. 3 prospect in the state of California, as well as the No. 6 quarterback in his recruiting class, according to 247Sports’ Composite.

During his freshman and sophomore seasons at Vista del Lago High School, the prolific dual-threat quarterback accumulated 4,672 passing yards and 42 touchdowns while completing 64 percent of his pass attempts. In addition to his dominant efforts through the air, Boyd also recorded 898 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns on 193 rushing attempts, proving himself to be a lethal weapon on offense.

Now, through eight games of his junior season with the Ravens, the 6-foot-3, 175 lbs. playmaker continues to perform at an elite level. Boyd is up to 1,652 passing yards and 19 touchdowns this season, while simultaneously recording 298 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 60 rushing attempts.

Unfortunately for Lanning and his coaching staff, their chances of landing Boyd are slowly diminishing with almost a month left before he announces his college decision. Boyd took unofficial visits to all three schools in his top three this season, with his trip to Eugene taking place during the program’s 84-0 victory over the Portland State Vikings in Week 3.

If the promising talent ultimately decides to commit elsewhere, the future outlook at the quarterback position for Lanning and the Ducks remains a massive question mark. Oregon landed 2027 four-star quarterback Will Mencl earlier this year, but are still desperately searching for a prospect in the 2028 class.
