CFP bracket: 12-team field in new College Football Playoff rankings

The penultimate College Football Playoff rankings were revealed on Tuesday, Dec. 2, and despite a fairly ho-hum rivalry week, there was some shakeup to the 12-team field.

The biggest change took place with the Nos. 3-5 seeds following Texas A&M’s loss to Texas on Black Friday. Jumping up to the Aggies’ former No. 3 spot was Georgia with Texas Tech and Oregon rounding out the top five, while Texas A&M fell to No. 7.

What didn’t see a mix-up was the top two seeds in No. 1 Ohio State and No. 2 Indiana, who are expected to play for the top-overall seed in the Big Ten championship game on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 8 p.m. ET inside Lucas Oil Stadium.

The CFP selection committee, for now, didn’t penalize Ole Miss in the first top 25 rankings since Lane Kiffin left for LSU. The Rebels, who will have offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. for their CFP run despite him being on Kiffin’s LSU staff, moved up a spot to No. 6 as a result of the top seven shakeup.

Another change of note to the CFP bracket was Alabama and Notre Dame swapping spots at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively. As the No. 9 seed in the bracket, the Crimson Tide has some breathing room going into the SEC championship game against Georgia.

The official College Football Playoff bracket will be announced in five days on Sunday, Dec. 7 at noon ET. The bracket gets underway with CFP first-round competition on Friday, Dec. 19 and Saturday, Dec. 20 at the site of the four highest-ranked at-large seeds.
