Nov. 4—***
Let the griping begin.
On Tuesday night, the first College Football Playoff rankings will be unveiled.
The folks in charge will remind everyone it is just a start and not the final 12 teams. And everyone will still complain.
I'm eager to see how many Big Ten teams end up among the Top 12. Based on merit, it should be three: No. 1 Ohio State, No. 2 Indiana and No. 7 Oregon.
But if you have been paying attention to any of the rumors about planning for future tournaments, you realize the Big Ten reportedly wants four automatic bids each year.
This year that ask would be giant stretch. There is only two other Big Ten teams that would be close: Southern California and Michigan. And they would both be a stretch.
Four bids wouldn't be enough for the SEC, which has that many teams in the current first six and two more that would merit CFP consideration.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I would be much more comfortable with the future of the CFP if all the negotiations were in public view. Put the commissioners in a room with college football fans and have them share how it is all going to work … fairly.
Given no restrictions, my hunch is the conferences, especially the Big Ten and SEC, will do what is best for their leagues. And not what is proper for the fans and the game.
It took college football oh so long to get to this point. It would be fantastic if the next step isn't the wrong one.
College football is in the happiest place in its history. The only things that will mess it up are greed and selfishness. Please, commishes, make the right choice.
