Texas A&M’s 2026 running back room is exceptionally talented with the new additions from the 2026 recruiting class, as five-star KJ Edwards, who signed with A&M on Wednesday, and four-star Carsyn Baker, who committed to the Aggies on Thursday morning.

Edwards, who was first committed to Texas heavily pursued by LSU, broke Carthage (TX) high school’s all-time rushing and touchdown leader after recording 215 total yards and three scores during Carthage’s semifinal win, as Edwards and his talented team are headed to the MSHSAA Cass 5 A State Championship on Friday night.

Baker, who decommitted from Florida two days ago, was one of the more sought-after prospects this week, as North Carolina and South Carolina were also in pursuit of the standout Georgia product, possessing the size, speed, toughness, and big-play ability to become a 1-2 punch with Edwards in the Aggie backfield.

So, how did head coach Mike Elko and his staff pull off this impressive commitment? In a new article from Rivals/On3 insider Chad Simmons, Baker explained that Elko, along with Texas A&M running backs coach Trooper Taylor, one of the program’s most consistent recruiters, were the primary reasons, outside of the overall appeal, that he ultimately chose College Station as his next destination.

“Coach Trooper is awesome,” Baker stated. “I got to know him at Duke, and it is the same with Coach Elko. Those guys recruited me early at Duke, I have relationships with them, and they are doing a great job at Texas A&M.”

Yes, going back to Elko and Taylor’s two-year stint at Duke during the 2022 and 2023 seasons played a vital role in Baker’s recruitment, which further proves that recruiting is a 24/7 process that never ends until pen hits paper. While credit goes to the coaching staff, this season’s rushing success, paired with KJ Edwards’ signing with the Aggies, served as the final acts of persuasion.

“I have been there a few times, and it has been a while, but they never went away,” Baker stated to Rivals. “They stayed with me, and let me know they were always interested, but as soon as they knew I was looking, they came back in hard. They came really hard the last few days and I made my decision on Tuesday.”

According to Rivals, Baker is the 16th-ranked running back prospect and the 23rd-ranked prospect in Georgia.
