YouTube Gold: College Football 96 Years Ago

College football has been around since 1869 and has a long and at times checkered history. The NCAA was actually formed in 1906 because football had grown too violent not to be monitored and regulated.
Over time it grew into much more the sport that we know today. The forward pass came into the game in 1895 in a game between Georgia and UNC and not surprisingly, UNC cheated because the play was still illegal.
It became legal in 1906, the same year the NCAA was formed.
In this video from 1929, Army and Notre Dame are playing and you get a real sense of how much has changed and how much has remained the same.
Just out of interest, check out the one guy who chose not to wear a helmet. Apparently at that point it was optional.
Anyway, it’s a fun look at an earlier version of the game. If you’ve never seen it, the movie Leatherheads has a nice look at this era and how wide open the game was. Lots of fun.
By the way, for a bit of context, this was filmed shortly after the stock market crash of 1929, which took place on October 24th. The game took place on November 28th. No one had any idea just how bad things were about to get but at least they got to lose themselves in a good old fashioned football donnybrook.
