Las Cruces football's Daniel Amaro adds statewide award to accomplishments

Daniel Amaro has had an outstanding season, and it’s being recognized nationally.

Las Cruces’ senior running back was named the 2025 MaxPreps New Mexico player of the year on Wednesday, Dec. 3. He is the first player from Las Cruces to have won the honor since it began in 2021.

Amaro had a stellar 2024 season, but managed to greatly surpass it this year. He scored 45 total touchdowns, of which 42 were rushing scores, and tallied 2,445 all-purpose yards. Amaro rushed for 1,927 this season, good for 148.2 per game.

He scored multiple touchdowns in all but one game this season and earned more than 100 all-purpose yards in all but two games, rushed for over 100 yards in nine games and rushed for over 200 yards in four games.

Amaro’s best performances were scattered across the season. He scored five touchdowns and tallied a season-high 303 all-purpose yards against Rio Rancho on Sept. 4. Amaro tallied 258 all-purpose yards with five rushing touchdowns against Hobbs on Sept. 19, and scored a season-high six rushing touchdowns two games later against Clovis on Oct. 3. His season-high in rushing yards came against Carlsbad on Oct. 24, when he rushed for 246 in total with four rushing touchdowns.

Amaro scored three touchdowns in the Bulldawgs’ playoff games against Los Lunas, La Cueva and Cleveland. He rushed for 234 yards in the semifinals against the Bears.

Amaro’s efforts helped Las Cruces reach its first state championship game since 2016. The Bulldawgs finished 12-1 and won the District 3-6A championship with a 6-0 record.
