Penn State has yet to officially announce the hiring of new head coach Matt Campbell, but it seems one key member of the coaching staff will be staying on the staff under the incoming head coach. Multiple reports on Friday evening say Terry Smith will remain on the football staff on a new contract, ensuring Campbell will have one of the most well-respected football staff members helping with the transition.

Smith was picking up some interest for a head coaching opportunity from UConn and Memphis, as each school was looking to replace its head coaches who have accepted offers elsewhere. Smith has served Penn State as the interim head coach since the firing of James Franklin, who has surfaced at Virginia Tech. Smith coached Penn State to a 3-3 record, ending the regular season with a three-game winning streak to clinch bowl eligibility.

Smith had received a growing amount of support from current and former Penn State football players to be the new head coach of the progam. While this may not be what some had wanted, knowing that Smith will remain a key part of the football staff may help smooth things over amid the head coaching change.

What Smith’s role will be on the staff will be confirmed later, but he will still likely be the coach leading the Nittany Lions in Penn State’s upcoming bowl game. Penn State’s bowl matchup and destination will be officially unveiled on Sunday.
