A look at TSSAA football state championship records that fell in 2025

CHATTANOOGA — The 2025 TSSAA football playoffs BlueCross Bowl state championship games have not short-changed anyone a fan of offense.

The first two days produced explosive numbers with eyebrow-raising statistics that have rewritten the TSSAA's record books.

Westview's Class 3A state championship win over Gatlinburg-Pittman, 62-21, on Dec. 5 set seven state championship game records and tied two more, prompting the TSSAA to print out a list for media to reference.

Three championship games will be played on Dec. 6, including Pearl-Cohn facing defending 10-time state champion Alcoa in Class 4A at 11 a.m. ET. Marion County will defend its 2A title against Huntingdon at 3 p.m. ET and undefeated 6A powers Oakland and Ravenwood will close out the state championships at 7 p.m. ET.

Here are the records that were set on Dec. 5

  • Longest pass play for a touchdown (99 yards by Graham Simpson to Donteze Joy)
  • Most passing yards by individual (566; Simpson)
  • Most combined points in a half (69; Westview 55, Gatlinburg-Pittman 14)
  • Most points in one half (55; Westview)
  • Most combined yards passing (699; Westview and Gatlinburg-Pittman)
  • Most passing yards by a team (566; Westview)
  • Total yards (690; Westview and Gatlinburg-Pittman)
  • Tied most touchdown passes by individual (7; Simpson)
  • Tied most touchdowns by a team (9; Westview and Gatlinburg-Pittman)

How BGA, FRA, Nashville Christian made history in TSSAA football playoffs Division II championships

While Westview put on a show on the second day of the BlueCross Bowl, BGA and FRA played a similar game that featured relentless scoring. The Wildcats captured its first state title in 22 years, beating FRA 61-27 on Dec. 4.

Nashville Christian, led by Vanderbilt signee Jared Curtis, won its second straight DII-A title and contributed to the championship record books. Here are the records that were set on Dec. 4.

  • Most combined pass attempts (69; BGA 31, FRA 38)
  • Most combined pass completions (44; BGA 24, FRA 20)
  • Most combined yards passing (674; BGA 384, FRA 291)
  • Most points in one half (49 by Nashville Christian)
  • Most touchdowns (BGA tied at 9)
