What does BYU's Big 12 championship loss mean for Notre Dame, Miami?

The first major College Football Playoff domino fell on Saturday as Texas Tech defeated BYU 34-7 to win its first Big 12 title in program history.

The Red Raiders, which were already probably a playoff lock entering the game, snatched up the league's automatic bid and likely secured a first-round bye in the process. The Cougars, which were on the outside looking in coming into the weekend, are now probably out of luck.

With the Big 12 set to be a one-bid league, however, the door is now open for the two teams hoping to find themselves on the right side of the bubble: No. 10 Notre Dame and No. 12 Miami.

Both teams are 10-2, and the Hurricanes boast the head-to-head win, but the Fighting Irish have sat ahead of them since Miami took its second loss to SMU. If the committee chooses not to swap teams that were idle this week, it would mean that Notre Dame is returning to the CFP.

However, committee chair Hunter Yurachek has stated that the committee will weigh a head-to-head result more heavily if the teams are next to each other in the rankings. Given the fact that BYU sat between them at No. 11 and is likely to fall, that dynamic could come into play.

Whether the committee chooses to bump Miami ahead of Notre Dame and into the field will be one of the bigger storylines to watch as we prepare for Selection Sunday.
