Michigan football is hiring former Ohio State defensive coordinator and assistant coach Kerry Coombs as its special teams coordinator, per a team announcement on Dec. 6.
Coombs, a Cincinnati native, served as assistant coach in two separate stints with the Buckeyes. Under former OSU coach Urban Meyer, Coombs was cornerbacks and special teams coach before accepting a position with the Tennessee Titans in 2018.
Coombs joined Ryan Day’s staff as a defensive coordinator after Greg Mattison’s retirement in 2020. Coombs was demoted from play-calling duties midway through the 2021 season and mutually parted ways with Ohio State at the season’s end.
Coombs’ latest position was coaching cornerbacks and special teams at Cincinnati from 2022 to 2024.
