The Atlantic Coast Conference has been unpredictable throughout the 2025 college football season.
Why should conference championship week be any different? With Duke knocking off No. 16 Virginia (No. 17 in College Football Rankings) at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, the chaos for the College Football Playoff will ensue.
Duke largely out-played the Cavaliers, but gave up a last-minute touchdown to send the game to overtime tied 20-20. From there, though, quarterback Darian Mensah found Jeremiah Hasley for a 1-yard touchdown in the first overtime to take a 27-20 lead. One play later, the Blue Devils secured an interception on a Virginia trick play, giving them the win and potentially throwing the CFP into disarray.
At 8-5 on the season, the Blue Devils aren't predicted to make the 12-team CFP, potentially locking the ACC out altogether in favor of potential 12-seed, Sun Belt champion James Madison. The Group of Five conference champion is not guaranteed a playoff spot, but it and American champion Tulane are likely to be ranked ahead of the Blue Devils.
