UConn football to play in Fenway Bowl against Army

UConn football has accepted an invite to the Fenway Bowl, where it will face the Army Black Knights on Saturday, December 27th at 2:15 p.m. from Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts.

This will be the Huskies’ third bowl appearance in four years and their second consecutive appearance in the Fenway Bowl, which they won over North Carolina, 27-14. This year’s game will be televised on ESPN.

UConn will release ticket information soon. Buying tickets through the school, “ensures that your purchase benefits the athletic department, and your seating location is within the UConn block,” according to a statement.

The Huskies (9-3) are going for their 10th win of the season, which would be a first as an FBS program. They did previously accomplish the feat in 1998 after making the FCS quarterfinals.

Former offensive coordinator Gordon Sammis is serving as interim head coach following the departure of Jim Mora for the Colorado State job. UConn has since hired Toledo’s Jason Candle to fill the vacancy. Candle will be introduced at a press conference on December 8th.

Army is 6-5 this season with its major rivalry game against 9-2 Navy still to be played, on Saturday, December 13. The Black Knights are led by head coach Jeff Monken, now in his 11th season at the helm of his successful tenure. He’s won eight or more games six times, including a 12-win campaign last season where Army finished no. 22 in the final AP Poll.

The Black Knights have two shared opponents with UConn, sharing the same result, defeating UAB and Air Force. They opened the season with a loss to FCS Tarleton State, one of their four one-score losses. Known for their triple-option attack, Army is a tough team to defend, as Mora noted after the Air Force game this year. The service academies’ style of play is a byproduct of their rigid recruiting standards, but when done right it is highly effective.
