Robert Griffin III went to bat against the College Football Playoff selection committee on Sunday, calling its final rankings “a complete joke” after Alabama secured the No. 9 seed despite a bad SEC Championship loss.

The former Heisman Trophy winner argued the committee applied an inconsistent standard, punishing BYU for its blowout defeat at the hands of Texas Tech while effectively giving Alabama a pass with Georgia.

“Getting blown out in the Conference Championship matters for a Big 12 team like BYU, but doesn’t matter for an SEC team like Alabama who had more losses and a bad loss to a 5-7 team? Unbelievable SEC bias,” Griffin wrote on X.

The Cougars, who finished 11-2, were left just outside the field, while Alabama remained inside the cut line despite picking up a third loss.

Griffin said the committee missed an easy opportunity to “do the most right thing” by elevating both Notre Dame and Miami after Alabama and BYU stumbled. Instead, the panel flipped the Hurricanes ahead of the idle Fighting Irish, who were ultimately excluded entirely.

“They punished BYU for losing, didn’t punish Alabama for losing and then flipped Notre Dame and Miami despite neither playing,” Griffin said. “None of it makes sense.”

Five SEC teams ultimately made the Playoff field, fueling the perception Griffin said now threatens the process’s integrity.
