South Florida may have another native win the Heisman Trophy.
Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza, born and raised in the Miami area and a product of Christopher Columbus High School in Miami-Dade County, seems poised to hear his name called as one of the finalists for the top individual award in college football. Mendoza, whose college career started at Cal before transferring to Indiana before this season, is the biggest star on the current No. 1 team in the nation and the new Big Ten champions.
Last year, Travis Hunter, the Colorado two-way star who grew up in Boynton Beach, was the Heisman winner.
The former Yale football commit who already had a bachelor’s degree from Cal is now getting ready for the Hoosiers’ second straight playoff run, which has much of the college football world turned upside down. Indiana, one of the least successful major college football programs of all-time, has never had a Heisman Trophy winner. But with how Curt Cignetti has turned over the IU program, who’s to say this won’t be another first that his team conquers?
Will Fernando Mendoza be a Heisman finalist?
According to BetMGM, Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza is the favorite at -5000 and currently lapping the field. Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin and Notre Dame quarterback Jeremiyah Love are next at +3000. Based on these odds along, one must think Mendoza is a lock to at least get an invite to the ceremony.
Fernando Mendoza stats
Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza has been nearly flawless in his first season as the Hoosiers starters. In 13 games, Mendoza has thrown for 2,980 yards, 33 touchdowns and six interceptions. In likely his Heisman-solidifying night, Mendoza was 15-for-22 for 222 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the win over Ohio State in the Big Ten championship game.
The last quarterback to win the Heisman Trophy was LSU’s Jayden Daniels, who threw for 3,812 yards, 40 touchdowns and four interceptions in the 2023 season (12 games) for the Tigers.
When are Heisman finalists announced?
The ballots for the Heisman Trophy voting are due by 5 p.m. Eastern on Dec. 8. In the evening of Dec. 8, the finalists will be announced. In years past, the announcement came during ESPN’s “Monday Night Countdown” show previewing that evening’s Monday Night Football game.
When is the Heisman Trophy ceremony?
The Heisman Trophy will be awarded during a private event — which will air nationally on ABC — on Dec. 13 in New York.
