Georgia football winners, losers from SEC championship win

The Georgia Bulldogs are SEC champions after toppling the Alabama Crimson Tide in a dominant 28-7 victory. Next up for Georgia is the College Football Playoff, but Georgia won’t play until Jan. 1, so there is plenty of time to reflect on Georgia’s second straight SEC championship win.
Georgia used contributions from several different players that have had small roles for most of the season. Wide receiver Cole Speer, running back Roderick Robinson, defensive back Rasean Dinkins and center Malachi Toliver all made their most significant contributions of the season for Georgia in the SEC championship.
Toliver started in place of injured center Drew Bobo. The Bulldogs were still able to move the ball effectively against a strong Alabama defense. At times the offense appeared a bit out of sync. Georgia had a few false starts, but overall the Dawgs allowed just one sack and ran for 141 rushing yards. Most importantly, Georgia cashed in with touchdowns on all four red zone trips against Alabama.
Winners, losers from Georgia’s SEC championship win
Winner: WR Cole Speer
Georgia senior wide receiver Cole Speer has not received much attention during his four season career at UGA. He has just five career catches for 56 yards including none this season, but he’s been a special teams fixture for the Bulldogs. He came through with a blocked punt on Alabama in the first quarter of the SEC championship that set the tone for the game.
“Just unbelievable kid,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said about Speer. “I mean, he sacrificed so much for this program. Gets me emotional thinking about it.”
Winner: Georgia RB Roderick Robinson
Georgia running back Roderick Robinson scored his first career receiving touchdown in the SEC championship against Alabama. Robinson has battled a lot of injuries since he had a promising freshman season in 2023 with 196 rushing yards and two touchdowns. It was good to see his persistence pay off in the form of a touchdown.
Loser: DB Demello Jones
Georgia defensive back Demello Jones arguably had the worst performance of any player in the SEC championship. It came down to a few plays for Jones. He lost the edge on a pair of tackles and allowed Alabama to gain a few more yards. Most notably, he had an unnecessary roughness penalty ahead of a third-and-long and a pass interference, on a pass that was probably uncatchable, on Alabama’s lone touchdown drive. Jones also could lose more snaps with how well Ellis Robinson is playing, but he’s had a good season in coverage.
Winner: Georgia’s run defense
Georgia’s defensive front controlled the game against Alabama. The Bulldogs shut down the Alabama running game and held the Crimson Tide to a negative rushing total for just the second time in school history. Georgia’s defensive line and linebackers also got constant pressure on Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson, who never looked very comfortable. Alabama’s longest rush all game was five yards.
Winner: DB Ellis Robinson

Ellis Robinson is a former five-star recruit and he’s playing like it. Robinson has come on strong since some early season struggles against Tennessee. He set the tone against Alabama with a physical tackle. He is making teams target first-team All-SEC cornerback Daylen Everette opposite of him, which is good for Georgia. Robinson had two tackles and two pass deflections against Alabama.
Winner: DB Rasean Dinkins
Georgia’s biggest surprise of the SEC championship was how much Dinkins played. He got a series with the starters against Charlotte and has been practicing well. Dinkins started for Georgia at STAR over Joenel Aguero and finsihed the game with one tackle.
“If Joenel (Aguero) is going to have this glove on, maybe we should give Dink a series or two,” Smart said. “Dink went one series, another series. Things were going our way.
“He’s a good football player. He’s got some safety characteristics from his high school. He reminds me a little bit of Bullard. He’s got a potential to be able to move to safety and play. He’s got a really good skill set.”
