It was a very difficult Sunday for Notre Dame football, as it found out that the College Football Playoff snubbed them and then opting out of a bowl game, and on Monday the first of what could be many players entered the transfer portal.

Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports is reporting that Irish quarterback Kenny Minchey will move on from the program after being in South Bend for the last three seasons. The after redshirting in 2023, he played sparingly behind Riley Leonard in 2024 and then looked like he could win job this fall.

Ultimately, head coach Marcus Freeman went with CJ Carr, and the rest is history. This move by Minchey shouldn’t really surprise anyone, considering that Carr is a class behind him, and would be the starter for potentially two-to-three more years. It’s clearly a hit to Notre Dame’s quarterback depth, as Blake Hebert is now the only current scholarship quarterback on the roster.

The Irish did sign Noah Grubbs in the 2026 class, and could potentially see 2027 commitment Teddy Jarrard reclassify to the 2026 group as well. Now this moves makes plenty of sense, as it was questioned when initially brought up.

We wish Kenny the best, and will be rooting for him wherever he lands next.
