Oklahoma Sooners more than capable of making noise in CFP

The Oklahoma Sooners have proven the doubters wrong all season, and they’ll have to once again in the College Football Playoff. Oklahoma earned the No. 8 seed in the 12-team field and will face the Alabama Crimson Tide. An Alabama team that the Sooners beat by two in Tuscaloosa less than a month ago.

It was that win that thrust the Sooners into the top 10 of the College Football Playoff rankings. It came two weeks after OU’s win in Knoxville over the Tennessee Volunteers. The only people who gave the Sooners credit for the back-to-back top 25 road wins were the College Football Playoff committee. Everyone else called it flukey or lucky.

Whatever they called it, the reality is they were hard-earned wins in two of the most difficult places to play in college football. And Oklahoma paid off that success with a pair of home wins over Missouri and LSU to close the regular season on a four-game winning streak.

“I know, for some people, maybe we don’t belong in the playoffs. But we’re here,” Venables said on Sunday. “I know a lot of teams were hoping they’d get matched up with Oklahoma, potentially, in the playoffs. Our focus, our energy, detail is to be able to play for a championship, no matter how crazy that might seem to everybody else. Our team believes we have everything we need to be able to do so.”

Doubted, but never out, the Sooners battled after their loss to Ole Miss to earn their spot in the College Football Playoff. As they get ready to host Alabama in a couple of weeks, the Sooners will have another opportunity to silence the doubters.

The Sooners’ offense has proven explosive, even if it’s not consistently efficient. But with the defense Oklahoma deploys, OU hasn’t had to be great, or even good, on offense to win games, and winning games is all that matters. The defense has led the way, and they’ve been disruptive and opportunistic.

It’s the type of defense that can win in the playoff. It’s the type of defense that can make life difficult for any offense. And that’s all they need.

If you’re not a believer in the Oklahoma Sooners, they’ll spend four quarters making you one.
