It seems like Western Michigan football has its man.
Fresh off a 23-13 win over Miami (Ohio) in the MAC championship game, the Broncos have reportedly signed coach Lance Taylor to a new five-year contract per ESPN’s Pete Thamel on Monday, Dec. 8. According to Thamel, Taylor’s new pay bump will put him “near the top of the MAC in salary.”
Taylor is in his third season at Western Michigan and led the Broncos to a 9-4 record and their first conference title since 2016. The Broncos will be playing Conference USA champion Kennesaw State in the Myrtle Beach Bowl on Dec. 19 (11 a.m., ESPN).
Since his hire in 2023, Taylor has improved his team’s win total from four to six to nine, taking the Broncos in 2024 to their first bowl game since 2021. The nine wins the Broncos recorded in 2025 are the most since the program’s historic 13-1 season (with a New Year’s Six bowl berth) under current Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck in 2016.
Along with winning the MAC title, the Broncos finished the 2025 regular season with the top conference record in the MAC at 7-1, with their only loss to eventual runner-up Miami.
