Oregon football at #9 in first 2025 College Football Playoff rankings

The first College Football Playoff rankings of the 2025 season are out, and Oregon is in the top ten, coming in ranked at #9:

The first five teams in the CFP rankings are identical to this week’s AP poll. As has typically been the case in the past, the CFP committee seems to have valued resume-to-date more than forward-looking projection or “eye test” as the AP voters tend to. As such a few teams which don’t yet have particularly notable wins are a few spots lower on the CFP rankings than in the AP poll.

Oregon is one of these, coming in three spots lower than their #6 ranking in the AP as games which they might have thought would be signature wins this season like Penn State or Oklahoma State (which was a powerhouse not long ago when the game was scheduled) have turned out to lack luster. Virginia, and indeed the entire ACC, appears to be less valued by the CFP committee for a similar reason, with the block of four ACC title contenders in the teens all coming in at lower ranks than in the AP.

A notable upshot for Oregon’s future resume can be observed in the lower end of the rankings – the CFP committee not only seems substantially higher on mid-tier Big Ten teams than the AP does, ranking every one of the appearing teams higher than the AP did, they were multiple ranks lower on SEC teams Missouri and Tennessee. Furthermore, three of Oregon’s four remaining opponents are ranked in the CFP and were shown more respect by the committee as potential resume wins if Oregon beats them: Washington and USC at one rank higher than the AP, and Iowa which came in at #20 while the AP has the Hawkeyes unranked.

Oregon remains a favorite at about 62% odds to make the College Football Playoffs according to FanDuel.
