Texas A&M (11-1, 7-1 SEC) will enter the College Football Playoff as the No. 7-ranked team and will host No. 10 Miami (10-2) on Saturday, December 20, at Kyle Field. This will be the Aggies’ first appearance in the CFP. Despite losing to the Texas Longhorns during the regular season finale, head coach Mike Elko’s veteran squad did more than enough to earn one of the 12 spots.
However, second-year offensive coordinator Collin Klein will leave the Aggies this offseason after accepting the head coaching position at his alma mater, Kansas State, but will call plays during A&M’s CFP run, however long it goes. The search for Elko’s next OC is ongoing, and on Monday, the second-year head coach provided some insight into the following steps he’ll take amid the chaos of hosting the Hurricanes in less than two weeks.
Will the next playcaller deploy a similar system? Is that important to Elko, knowing that starting quarterback Marcel Reed is returning next season? Thanks to one of the reporters who fielded this question, Elko went more in-depth with his response:
“If you look at our program from the two years of Duke to the two years of Texas A&M, there’s some very strong similarities in terms of what we look like on offense. Those are probably the philosophical things that I would like a Texas A&M football offense to look like. Obviously, every coordinator is going to have their own slant, twist things. So, there’s a base part of the fundamental principles that won’t go anywhere.”
Current WR coach Holmon Wiggins has been a rumored top candidate to take over as the primary playcaller next season. If what Elko stated above holds, this would be a no-brainer to continue what Collin Klein started, handing off the baton in 2026.
“Our intentions right now are to get through the season and let that play out, but we’re in a really good position.”
Texas A&M vs. Miami will kick off on ABC and ESPN at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 20.
