Ryan Walters is in his first season as defensive coordinator at Washington (8-4, 5-4 Big Ten) in 2025. The Huskies will conclude their season Saturday versus Boise State in the LA Bowl.
Kickoff between the Huskies and Broncos is scheduled for 8 p.m. EST at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California (ABC).
Walters is an ideal candidate for Tennessee’s vacant defensive coordinator position. On Monday, the Vols and head coach Josh Heupel parted ways with defensive coordinator Tim Banks after five seasons.
Heupel and Walters were on the same coaching staff at Missouri and Oklahoma.
Heupel was co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, while Walters was Oklahoma’s graduate assistant in 2012. From 2016-17, Heupel served as Missouri’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach and Walters was the Tigers’ co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach.
During Washington’s first season with Walters as defensive coordinator, Brian Odom is serving as the Huskies’ inside linebackers coach.
Odom is the brother of Purdue head coach Barry Odom. Brian Odom played with Heupel at Oklahoma in 2000, winning the 2000 Iron Man Award given by the Sooners’ strength coaches. He also coached with Heupel in 2005 at Arizona, serving as the Wildcats’ assistant director of performance enhancement. Heupel was tight ends coach at Arizona in 2005.
The two coaches were also together at Missouri, along with Walters. Brian Odom was the Tigers’ outside linebackers coach in 2017.
