BATON ROUGE – Lane Kiffin has assembled most of his full-time on-field coaching staff at LSU football.
But there are a few spots still open. And current LSU running backs coach Frank Wilson, who has also been serving as the program’s interim head coach after former coach Brian Kelly was fired back in October and who’ll coach LSU (7-5) in the Texas Bowl against Houston (9-3) on Dec. 27, has already expressed his desire to remain on staff.
“I love LSU,” Wilson said following the Tigers’ 17-13 loss at Oklahoma to close the regular season two weeks ago. “As long as LSU will have me, I’d love to be a part of what we’re doing here.”
While Kiffin has filled most of the coaching spots on the offensive side of the ball, the running backs coach position is still available. There has been talk of Kiffin wanting to bring his running backs coach Kevin Smith from Ole Miss to LSU, much like he did the rest of his offensive staff from Oxford, but nothing is set yet.
Wilson has worked for Kiffin before at Tennessee as wide receivers coach. It was only for one season in 2009 but a working relationship is already established between the two.
Ahead of LSU’s matchup with Houston in the Texas Bowl, Wilson was asked Tuesday morning if he has any idea of what his future holds at LSU. He said he and Kiffin have had conversations but nothing concrete has come out of those talks.
“For me and for coach Kiffin, it’s let’s play this game on the 27th and we’ll go into those details later,” Wilson said. “We just want to finish what we started with this football team. Give them our undivided attention before transition happens.
“Until then, nothing will necessarily happen in that regard. There’ll be opportunity there, where that lies, I’m not sure. But the priority is our current football team.”
