Clemson will face Penn State in the Pinstripe Bowl on December 27th.
After rallying to close out the season with four straight wins, Clemson will be rewarded with its first appearance in the Pinstripe Bowl, located in New York City’s Yankee Stadium. The showdown will be televised on ABC at noon.
The narrative surrounding this matchup will undoubtedly center on the lofty preseason expectations for both teams, as both have fallen far short of where most expected them to be by December.
Penn State debuted as the #2 team in the country and won its first three warmup games before a thrilling overtime loss to Oregon started its downward slide. Their next three losses came against much weaker competition, dropping games to UCLA (42-37), Northwestern (22-21), and Iowa (25-24). After getting dispatched easily by Ohio State 38-14, Penn State nearly pulled off a stunner against then #2-ranked Indiana, coming up just short 27-24. That performance seemed to provide the Nittany Lions with enough juice to rip off 3 consecutive wins to finish the season 6-6 and qualify for a bowl game against Clemson.
The Tigers experienced a similar storyline this season, debuting with national title aspirations and faltering multiple times throughout the season, before rallying to finish the regular season on an upward slant. Both Clemson and Penn State will be hungry to secure a final victory to give their disappointing seasons a positive conclusion.
Although the Pinstripe Bowl is a far cry from playing in the College Football Playoff, especially for two teams who were largely considered to be major players this season, qualifying for a postseason bowl game is always a great accomplishment and one that should be celebrated by players and fans alike.
We will now wait to see how many players decide to opt out of participating in the bowl game, and whether we will get to see these two squads close to full strength or not.
