Offensive line issues were a big reason for Nebraska’s disappointing 7-5 record in 2025, and that ultimately culminated in the axing of O-line coach (and uncle of the team’s five-star QB) Donovon Raiola.
Dylan Raiola’s season ended last month after suffering a broken right fibula in Nov. 1’s 21-17 loss to USC which, paired with his uncle’s firing, has led to questions about his future in Lincoln.
That’s something that head coach Matt Rhule addressed Tuesday (sort of) — holding true to his policy of not discussing the future choices of any of his players.
Matt Rhule addresses Dylan Raiola situation
“Again, so sorry,” Rhule told reporters Tuesday. “But you guys know I’m not going to talk about any player’s future. Like, I’m just not doing that. That’s their job. It’s each player’s job. They have to announce their own thing because I would never want to misspeak.”
“But, yeah, I talked to the whole team about Donnie and certainly to Dylan. That’s his uncle. He loves him. So, I certainly talked to him but I talked to all the O-linemen, I talked to all the guys. I mean, Donnie was loved by a lot of guys,” the coach added.
“So, at the end of the day, I don’t like firing people. I don’t like affecting their families, I don’t like moving on from people. But I do have to do what I think is right for the program,” Rhule concluded. “So, I certainly talked to Dylan and I certainly talked to the O-linemen. I talked to the team. In terms of people’s futures, that’s up to each person.”
Coach Rhule gives update on Raiola’s recovery
After being one of the top recruits in the nation in the 2024 class, Raiola’s numbers took a jump across the board in Year 2 — throwing for 2,000 yards, 18 touchdowns and six interceptions while also completing 72% of his passes.
Unfortunately, his season was cut short by the aforementioned injury. But Coach Rhule says the Huskers signal-caller is doing all the right things to work himself back.
“Oh yeah, it just looks different, right?” Rhule said. “He’s in treatment … he was on his scooter going into treatment. So, Dylan’s done everything.”
According to reports, the sophomore QB and his camp strongly considering entering the transfer portal last year before deciding to return to the school. We’ll see if they test that again amid the program‘s continued struggles.
