Before Nick Saban was provided his wit and expert analysis as a part of ESPN’s “College GameDay,” he was one of the best coaches that the sport of college football had ever seen. His 28-year-long career saw him win seven national championships, winning one at LSU and the next six at Alabama.
While his name is frequently mentioned in coaching searches, as it was again this year for the LSU opening, the 74-year-old former head coach has made it clear that he no longer has that itch to coach football. This means his record will stay three wins short of 300, as he compiled a 297-71-1 record across stops at Toledo, Michigan State, LSU and Alabama.
Although his coaching career is over, Saban remains in the public eye and has come into his own as a media personality, despite all the rat poison they fed his teams throughout the year. On Tuesday, Saban himself was fed one final piece of rat poison about his success, as Alabama congratulated him on being inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
“Congratulations, Coach Nick Saban, on your induction into the NFF College Football Hall of Fame — a tribute to a legacy that changed us all,” wrote Alabama on Instagram.
As expected, plenty fans flooded the comment section with praise for Saban’s lastest achievement.
“Congratulations to the GOAT!! I will always remember Trust the process,” wrote one fan.
“Thank you Nick! You made my childhood great. Roll Damn Tide,” said a second.
“Goat, no better coach in history,” added another.
“Undisuputed GREATEST OF ALL TIME!!! Congrats coach Saban,” exclaimed another.
“Congratulations coach! I hope to have the honor of meeting you one day. Roll Tide,” commented another.
“Congrats to @CollegeGameDay’s Nick Saban and @GMA’s Michael Strahan on their induction into the @cfbhall tonight in Las Vegas,” wrote ESPN Vice President Bill Hofheimer.
In addition to Saban being inducted, notable names such as Michael Strahan, Montee Ball and Urban Meyer were also inducted.
Saban, who was announced as an inductee back in January by the College Football Hall of Fame, will be honored Tuesday evening with his fellow classmates in Las Vegas.
The 67th NFF Annual Awards Dinner is taking place at the Bellagio Hotel and Casino.
Saban found out about his induction on the set of “College GameDay” before last year’s College Football Playoff Semifinal game between Ohio State and Texas. In true Saban fashion, he credited those around him for his success.
“Thank you so much,” Saban said. “But anytime anything like this happens it’s because you had a lot of great people in your organization. A lot of great players, a lot of great coaches, a lot of support staff and they made a great team. I was happy to drive the bus, but we had some great people on it.”
Whether you hated or loved him, you cannot argue that Saban is a legend of the game, and now his legend status has been cemented.
