Earlier Tuesday, it was reported that Ty Howle is following James Franklin to Blacksburg to become the Hokies new offensive coordinator. Well, you can add another Nittany Lions assistant making the move to Virginia Tech as quarterbacks coach Danny O’Brien is reportedly joining the Hokies as well.
A former quarterback for James Franklin at Maryland, it’s no surprise that O’Brien is not sticking around Happy Valley. He ends his tenure with the Nittany Lions after five years in State College, serving as an analyst, graduate assistant, and then the last two years as the full-time quarterbacks coach.
Beyond O’Brien and Howle, there hasn’t been any other news about any other Penn State assistant coaches leaving the program. Campbell was going to have those discussions with the current Nittany Lion staffers this week though, so we should be getting answers soon on who is sticking around and who is headed out.
While it remains to be seen who Matt Campbell will hire to be Penn State’s next quarterbacks coach, fans should be familiar with his QB coach at Iowa State, Jake Waters. The Kansas State alum has spent six seasons coaching under Campbell, working his way up from a GA in 2017 to the QB coach in 2024.
