Florida A&M football will be looking for a new head coach and quarterback for the 2026 season.
Redshirt sophomore starting quarterback RJ Johnson III intends to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal, announced on Dec. 7.
His plans to play elsewhere next season came a day before FAMU fired head coach James Colzie III following a 12-12 record in two years, including a 5-7 finish this year, the program’s first losing season since 2017.

Johnson won the Rattlers’ starting quarterback job after a training camp position battle before the 2025 season. The Atlanta native completed 215 out of 331 passes (65 percent) and posted 2,597 passing yards, 18 touchdowns through the air, three rushing, against four interceptions in 11 appearances, all starts.
The transfer portal opens for entry on January 2, 2026, and closes on Jan. 16, 2026.
Johnson is part of the latest wave of transfer portal entrants to depart Galimore Powell Fieldhouse. FAMU’s starting wide receiver, Goldie Lawrence, and defensive back Justin Bostic have both announced their recruitment has reopened following the Colzie firing.
Last week, FAMU’s Southwestern Athletic Conference First Team kicker Daniel Porto and lead sacker, defensive end Antonio Camon Jr., among others, announced they will enter the transfer portal at the new year.
The Rattlers’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Henry Burris, is currently serving as FAMU’s acting head coach.
Coaches on FAMU’s coaching vacancy hot board include names such as Albany State head coach Quinn Gray, Prairie View A&M head coach Tremaine Jackson, and National Football League veteran quarterback Teddy Bridgewater.
