Pewamo-Westphalia, Leslie lead Lansing area's D7-8 all-state football selections

CMAC champion Pewamo-Westphalia and Leslie led the individuals from Greater Lansing who were selected to the Michigan Sportswriters Division 7-8 all-state football team.
P-W, which also won district and regional titles, had a pair of players honored. Linebacker Luke Paxton led the selections and was named first team all-state, while quarterback Ty Thelen earned second team honors. Paxton had 95 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, two sacks and a fumble recovery while being a key presence on defense for the Pirates, who went 12-1.
Thelen was 75-of-147 passing for 1,337 yards and 33 touchdowns and had 157 carries for 1,324 yards and 23 touchdowns en route to being the CMAC offensive MVP for P-W.
Leslie also had two players honored with receiver Braydin Johnson leading the way as a first team all-state selection. Quarterback Joel Cranmore was named honorable mention all-state. Johnson had 63 catches for 1,212 yards and nine touchdowns and added 21 tackles and five interceptions on defense with three of those being returned for scores. Cranmore threw for 2,201 yards and 19 touchdowns and ran for 239 yards and seven touchdowns in eight games.
Perry, CMAC runner-up Fowler and Ithaca were the other area schools to have players named all-state. Perry's Jacob Adkins was named first team all-state as a punter. He averaged a school-record 47.6 yards on his 22 punts and landed 10 inside the 20.
Fowler linebacker Trevor Spicer was named honorable mention all-state. Spicer was voted the CMAC defensive MVP for the second straight season and had 60 tackles, five tackles for loss, a sack, two interceptions and a fumble recovery before dislocating his elbow in Week 8.
Ithaca, which captured a Division 7 district title, had quarterback Gibson Rondy earn honorable mention all-state honors. Rondy threw for 1,783 yards and 14 touchdowns and ran for 611 yards and 10 scores in nine games.
