The University of Michigan is firing head football coach Sherrone Moore, after the university claims he had an inappropriate relationship with a staffer.
Athletic Director Warde Manuel released the following statement on the matter:
“U-M Head football coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately. Following a University investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior.”
Manuel concluded the statement by saying that Biff Poggi has been appointed as head coach on an interim basis.
Serving in an official capacity as Michigan’s head coach, Moore finishes his U-M career with an 18-8 record, including a 9-3 record this past season. Moore led the Wolverines in wins over Penn State, Maryland and Ohio State during Jim Harbaugh’s suspension over the Connor Stalions in 2023, but those wins don’t count towards his official record.
Before becoming head coach, Moore joined Michigan’s staff as a tight ends coach (2018-2020) before working as an offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator (2021-22) and as the team’s sole offensive coordinator during the 2023 National Championship season. Under Moore’s leadership, Michigan’s offensive line won back-to-back Joe Moore awards, given to the best offensive line in the country.
There’s obviously a LOT to unpack with this news; stay with Maize N Brew as we continue to learn more about the situation.
