Michigan football fired coach Sherrone Moore on Wednesday, Dec. 10.
The Wolverines put associate coach Biff Poggi in charge as the team's interim coach.
This won't be the first time Poggi will be in charge of the Wolverines: He served as the team's coach for early-season games in 2025 against Central Michigan on Sept. 13 and Nebraska on Sept. 20. Michigan won both games under Poggi as acting coach with Moore suspended.
Poggi, 66, was hired as Michigan's associate head coach in November after serving as the coach at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte from 2023-24. Poggi was also the associate head coach at Michigan from 2021-22 under former coach Jim Harbaugh before becoming coach at Charlotte.
Poggi has an 8-16 record as a college coach, going 3-9 in his first year at Charlotte in 2023 and 3-7 in his second year, before being fired with two games left in the season.
Poggi spent 19 years as coach of the Gilman School in Maryland, where his team won 13 conference championships. He then moved to coach St. Frances Academy in Baltimore, a predominately Black Catholic high school. Poggi brought recruiting to the Maryland high school scene, and made St. Frances into a juggernaut, sending numerous recruits to Michigan.
Poggi’s son, Henry, was a fullback for the Wolverines in 2013-17.
Biff Poggi coaching record
Poggi took over the team for two games in the 2025 season during Moore's suspension, coaching the Wolverines to a 63-3 win against Central Michigan In Week 3 and a 30-27 win over Nebraska in the team's Big Ten opener in Week 4.
Poggi was 6-16 over two seasons at his previous stint coaching UNC Charlotte from 2023-24.
