We’re in a historic moment in college football as several major Power 4 conference jobs are open at the same time. Not only are the LSU Tigers and Penn State Nittany Lions offering the rare opportunity to take over programs with deep history and recruiting pipelines. Naturally, the best coach of all time has been linked.
Nick Saban won 297 games and six National Championships over the course of 28 years. Five of those years were at LSU before he bolted to the NFL and subsequently returned to college to take the Alabama Crimson Tide job. Now, there’s hope Saban could return to the Tigers.
While Saban downplayed how good a job LSU is, Lane Kiffin all but telling LSU no, and Alabama’s defensive coordinator almost making a mockery of LSU’s current offense, the Tigers have a good situation if their leadership is aligned. But ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit has a strong feeling on what Saban’s next move won’t be.
Kirk Herbstreit dispels Nick Saban coaching comeback rumors
Herbstreit, who has worked with Saban since the former Tide head coach retired two years ago, says we’re not seeing the 74-year-old on the sidelines again.
“We gotta stop bringing up Nick Saban for all these jobs. He’s not going anywhere. My man’s enjoying his life. For 50 years, I’ve been in a hurry or I’m late to something. 50 years. Now, he’s got Mercedes-Benz dealerships and Ferrari dealerships. He’s got a boat, he’s golfing.”
Herbstreit then continued after his co-host, Joey Galloway, talked about a boating trip he had with Saban.
“He’s not coaching,” Kirk said. Galloway added, “No, I can’t see him…You want to talk about someone happy?” Finally, Kirk concluded on the Nonstop podcast, “He’s the happiest he’s probably been in a long, long time. He and Ms. Terry.”
