Texas A&M (11-1, 7-1 SEC) will host Miami (10-2) in the first round of the College Football Playoff on Saturday, December 20, which will be both programs’ first appearance in the tournament. For senior edge Cashius Howell, this could be his last college game before entering the 2026 NFL Draft.
After producing an SEC-high 11.5 sacks and over 40 pressures this season, Cashius Howell was named SEC Defensive Player of the Year on Wednesday after earning All-SEC first-team honors. For those who didn’t pay attention this offseason, Howell was left off the All-SEC preseason teams, barely gaining any recognition outside of those of us in Aggie media.
Well, people are paying attention now, as the redshirt senior has been one of the most dominant players in the country from start to finish, and, despite his projected 30-inch arm length lighter frame, the Kansas City (MO) native is built to succeed at the next level due to his elite athleticism and added strength after working with S&C coach Tommy Moffitt throughout the season.
This is also a significant achievement for the Texas A&M coaching staff, especially second-year head coach Mike Elko, who saw Howell’s potential after two seasons at Bowling Green, before any other Power 4 program did. Also a Lombardi Trophy nominee, Howell took time before the ceremony to discuss his SEC Defensive Player of the Year award, reflecting on his career season before taking on the Hurricanes.
“It’s such an honor.”
