The 2025 college football season has been a roller coaster, full of ups and downs, and full of unforgettable moments and big games from week to week. After last week’s slate of conference championship games, it’s time for bowl season and the College Football Playoff to finish up the year, before the long offseason awaits yet again. The Oklahoma Sooners made the CFP this year, holding strong as the No. 8 seed in the Selection Sunday rankings.
However, Week 16 offers the final game of the regular season, and the first games of the postseason. Saturday will serve as the kickoff for a heavy slate of bowls in December and January, but there’s also one more iconic rivalry that has yet to be played in 2025.
There’s still plenty for fans of college football to keep an eye on this Saturday, and there will be some pretty good action on the field to send us into the postseason.
Here are four things you need to be watching during Week 16.
1. Army vs. Navy, 2:00 p.m. CT
One of the greatest rivalries in all of college football takes place on Saturday, as Army and Navy will face off in their annual matchup to close out the regular season. The Black Knights will be playing in a bowl later in December, but Jeff Monken’s team would love to avenge last year’s upset loss in this game with an upset of their own this year.
Brian Newberry’s Midshipmen are headed to a bowl game in early January, and they’ve had an excellent season. They nearly made the conference title game in the American, and they’ve been a tough out all season long.
This game is so unique within the college football landscape, with all of the tradition and honor that comes along with it, and the option offenses that give the action a totally different feel. The Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy is also up for grabs at a neutral site in Baltimore, Maryland.
2. Heisman Trophy ceremony, 6:00 p.m. CT
While we await the playoff, where the 12 teams left standing will fight for college football’s ultimate team award, we’ll find out who won college football’s ultimate individual award, the Heisman Trophy, on Saturday night. Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love, Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza, Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia and Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin are the four finalists for the Heisman in 2025.
Love ran for almost 1,400 yards and had 18 scores on the ground during his excellent season. Mendoza has thrown for just under 3,000 yards and 33 touchdowns, while adding six rushing scores while quarterbacking the No. 1 team in the nation. Pavia has 27 passing scores, nine rushing scores, and has thrown for 3,192 yards this year. Sayin threw for 3,323 yards and 31 touchdowns during his first season as a starter.
After a wild season, it’s time to crown the Heisman winner in New York City, and a wide-open race all year long in 2025 is still looking somewhat that way heading into the final days of the race.
3. Boise State vs. Washington, 7:00 p.m. CT
Boise State and Washington will meet in the LA Bowl this year in primetime this Saturday. The Broncos are once again Mountain West champions with a big win last week, and they come in at 9-4. While they are not back in the CFP like last they were year, they do have the opportunity to get a tenth win in 2025.
The Huskies enjoyed a bounce-back year in the Big Ten this season, and they’ll arrive in Inglewood, California with an 8-4 record. They were competitive in league play this year, but they ultimately couldn’t match up with the conference’s big dogs. A win over Boise State on Saturday night could be a good springboard for Washington heading into next season.
4. South Carolina State vs. Prairie View A&M, 11:00 a.m. CT
The Celebration Bowl in Atlanta Georgia matches the winner of the two HBCU conferences, the MEAC and the SWAC, in the de-facto HBCU title game at the FCS level. It’s also come to serve as a kickoff to bowl season, and it will be that again on Saturday.
The Bulldogs went unbeaten in the MEAC this year, and two of their losses came to FBS opponents. The Panthers won their first SWAC title since 2009 this year, and they have won nine out of their last ten games heading into this one. After that, there’s plenty of games to pick from during bowl season, and college football has a little something for everyone in the weeks to come.
From Week 0 to Week 16, we’ve had so many big-time matchups, and between bowl season and the playoff still ahead of us, there are sure to be more twists and turns coming our way.
