COLUMBIA — South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer has hired Kendal Briles to fill the opening for offensive coordinator.
South Carolina’s board of trustees approved the contract and hire on Dec. 11. It’s a 3-year deal, $2 million his first year, $2.1 in his second and $2.2 million in his third.
Briles joined TCU in January 2023 as associate head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Jeremiah Donati was the athletic director at TCU from 2017 until he was hired for the same position at South Carolina in December 2024.
This is the fourth coordinator Beamer has hired since he took over the program in December 2020. The Gamecocks went 4-8 this season, the worst for Beamer.
Mike Shula was fired on Nov. 2 after less than one full year. He promoted Shula from offensive analyst to coordinator last December when former OC Dowell Loggains was named coach at Appalachian State.

TCU went 8-4 this season and 9-4 last year but 5-7 in Briles’ first year. The Horned Frogs were 30th in the FBS (134 teams listed via NCAA stats) in total offense, averaging 425.3 total yards per game this year.
They were eighth overall in passing offense with 292.8 passing yards per game but 93rd in rushing offense with 132.6 rushing yards per game. They were also eighth in passing offense in 2024.
TCU quarterback Josh Hoover has thrown 2,206 or more yards under Briles, including 3,949 in 2024 and 3,472 this season. He threw 29 passing touchdowns and 13 interceptions in the regular season. The Horned Frogs play Southern Cal in the 2025 Valero Alamo Bowl on Dec. 30.
This will mark Briles’ seventh college offensive coordinator job, and not his first in the SEC. He spent three seasons at Arkansas from 2020-22 and has worked at Baylor, Houston, FAU and Florida State.
Briles served as assistant coach at Baylor for his father Art Briles for nine years but in 2016, Art Briles was dismissed from the program due to his mishandling of multiple sexual assault allegations against Baylor football players.
Kendal Briles was hired by FAU for the 2017 season and served under Lane Kiffin.
