Former LSU football head coach Brian Kelly could be a top candidate to take over at Michigan after the school fired its head coach, Sherrone Moore, on Wednesday evening. On3's Pete Nakos included Kelly on the initial hot board for the gig.
Kelly, now 64, may not be looking for a job that would bring the sort of headache coaching at Michigan would. He was in a similar situation at LSU, running the show at a blue-blood program where every decision would be looked at under a microscope, for better or for worse. Maybe, given his age and two-and-a-half decades spent coaching top programs, Kelly could decide he’d like a job with less pressure.
However, if Kelly still feels he has the fire to keep running a major program, there aren’t many fits better than Michigan. Kelly began his coaching career at Grand Valley State, located just two hours from Ann Arbor. He coached there from 1987 until 2003, when he took the head coaching job at Central Michigan. Kelly stayed there for another two years before moving on again.
So, if he decided to take a new job, it could be a full-circle moment for Kelly to go back to the state where he began his coaching career.
Also, from an LSU perspective, it would be helpful if Kelly were to get the Michigan job. According to the terms of his buyout, Kelly’s payments from LSU would decrease if he accepted another football position, and he is also required to make "good-faith, reasonable, and sustained efforts to obtain qualifying employment."
