Former Ducks head coach Chip Kelly in the mix for Georgia Tech OC job

On Nov. 23, Chip Kelly was fired by the Las Vegas Raiders after producing one of the league’s worst offenses midway through his first season as the team’s offensive coordinator. Now, roughly three weeks later, the former Oregon Ducks head coach is reportedly already in the mix for another coordinator position, this time with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. He has interviewed for their vacant offensive coordinator position, On3’s Pete Nakos reported.
Kelly was hired by the Raiders after a standout 2024 campaign as the Ohio State Buckeyes‘ offensive coordinator in which he engineered the ninth-best scoring offense and had a hand in them winning a national championship.
But things went south quickly in Las Vegas after Kelly was hired by head coach Pete Carroll, as the Raiders’ offense averaged just 15.0 points per game (tied for last in the NFL) and held a 2-9 record at the time of his firing.
It’s not the first NFL job that Kelly has been fired from.
Kelly experienced his highest successes during his time with the Ducks, leading the team to the BCS National Title Game in 2011 before departing after just three seasons in 2012. He was hired by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2013 as their head coach but lasted just three seasons, failing to make the playoffs in his final year. Kelly was then hired by the San Francisco 49ers as their head coach, but was fired after just one season and a 2-14 record.
He went back to the college ranks after that, serving as the UCLA head coach from 2018-2024 before taking the Buckeyes’ offensive coordinator job.
On the job market once again, Kelly is eyeing the Yellow Jackets’ offensive coordinator position. The job is open due to former play-caller Buster Faulkner, who won FootballScoop’s 2025 Offensive Coordinator of the Year, being hired by the Florida Gators to assume the same position.

If he lands the job, Kelly would be under head coach Brent Key, who’s finishing up his fourth season at the helm of the program and has a 27-19 record to date.
The Yellow Jackets had a top-25 scoring offense this season, making the bar relatively high for whoever steps in the offensive coordinator position. Kelly certainly has the chops to step in and succeed as he’s shown he can do so at the college level.
