The NCAA transfer portal for football is open again from Jan. 2-16, but players already are making their pending availability on the transfer market known.
Texas Tech football kicker Upton Bellenfant announced on Thursday, Dec. 11, that he’ll have his name in the portal with one year of eligibility left.
Bellenfant began this season in competition with Stone Harrington for the kicker job. Bellenfant was 6 for 6 on field goals through the first six games and 14 of 16 on extra points, but special teams coordinator Kenny Perry ultimately went with Harrington the second half of the season. Harrington became a Groza Award semifinalist and is 22 for 27 going into the College Football Playoff.
Bellenfant transferred to Tech in January from the University at Buffalo, where he made 18 of 21 field goals last season and was second-team all-Mid-American Conference.
The junior from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, was at Alabama for the 2022 and 2023 season before his one year at Burffalo.
Texas Tech (12-1) is coming off a 34-7 victory over Brigham Young in last week’s Big 12 championship game. The Red Raiders have a first-round bye and the No. 4 seed in the College Football Playoff. Tech will play a CFP quarterfinal on New Year’s Day at the Orange Bowl against the winner of No. 5 seed Oregon and No. 12 seed James Madison.
