The Penn State football offense will be led by one of the youngest Power 4 coordinators in the nation.
Taylor Mouser, 34, joins head coach Matt Campbell’s new Nittany Lion staff after the two worked together the past decade at Iowa State. Mouser will replace Andy Kotelnicki, who led Penn State’s offense the past two years. Kotelnicki does plan to coach through the Dec. 27 Pinstripe Bowl against Clemson, according to reports like Blue White Illustrated.
Mouser served the past two seasons as the Cyclones’ offensive coordinator, including a record-setting 2024, featuring two of the best wide receivers in school history and a program record for victories (11).
Mouser joins two other former Iowa State assistants on Campbell’s PSU staff so far, Ryan Clanton (offensive line coach) and Deon Broomfield (defensive secondary coordinator).
Here are three things to know about Mouser:
Penn State football: Taylor Mouser has only coached under Matt Campbell
Mouser’s coaching career has grown exclusively under Campbell.
The Chandler, Arizona native and Adams State (Colorado) graduate first joined Campbell’s staff as a graduate assistant at Toledo in 2015.
Mouser moved with Campbell when he took the Iowa State head coaching job the following year. He first worked in off-field positions (grad assistant, assistant director of scouting, senior quality control) through the 2020 season.
Since then, he’s served as tight ends coach, assistant head coach and offensive coordinator.
Mouser led another standout tight end room
Mouser may be in charge of Penn State’s elite tight end room after coaching the same position at Iowa State the past five seasons.
He tutored Iowa State’s standout tight ends Charlie Kolar (only three-time Iowa State All-American), Chase Allen (All-Big 12 honors) and current Cyclone junior Benjamin Brahmer, who was a freshman All-American.
Mouser coached record-setting offenses at Iowa State
Mouser helped coach four of the most prolific offenses in Iowa State history.
In 2019, Iowa State broke the school record for total offense (444.3 yards per game) and had its third-best scoring unit (32.2 points per game) in school history. In 2020, ISU owned its second-best scoring offense (32.9) and third-best total offense (436.3) in history.
The 2023 Cyclone attack led the nation in big plays, scoring 11 touchdowns of 50-plus yards. They also were among the national leaders “red zone” efficiency, converting on 31-of-33 trips (93.5 percent) inside the 20 yard line − ranking first in the Big 12.
As coordinator, Mouser’s 2024 group averaged 31.1 points per game, the fifth-most in school history.
