Sewanee football hires Joe Freitag as coach to replace Andy McCollum

Sewanee football hired Joe Freitag as its new football coach on Dec. 11.

Freitage replaced Andy McCollum, who was fired after three seasons on Nov. 10, with one game left in the 2025 season.

Sewanee lost its final game against Millsaps 34-20 and finished with a 3-7 record. Freitage is Sewanee’s fourth head coach in 10 years.

Freitag, a Springfield, Illinois, native, has spent the last 11 years as the offensive coordinator at Monmouth, a Division III school in Illinois. He coached the offensive line for 10 years and moved to working with quarterbacks this past season.

“It is evident that Sewanee has a rich tradition, commitment to excellence, and a strong sense of community,” Freitage said in a release. “I look forward to working with our student-athletes, staff, and community as we build a winning program, one that strives for success both on-and-off the field.”

Monmouth posted a 9-2 record and reached the Division III playoffs in 2025.

Joe Freitag was hired as Sewanee's new football coach on Dec. 11.

The Scots have registered a 68-4 mark in the Midwest Conference since 2015, reaching the postseason in 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2025.

“Joe brings a wealth of competitive Division III experience and is widely known as a strong recruiter, an innovative strategic coordinator, and a player’s coach who has successfully built transformational relationships with his student-athletes,” Sewanee athletic director John Shackelford said in a release. “He has a record of helping student-athletes balance a rigorous academic curriculum with a demanding athletic schedule, and the ability to participate in many leadership roles across campus.”

Freitag also spent three seasons at Benedictine (2012-14), reaching the postseason in his last year there.

Freitag played on the offensive line at Monmouth from 2003-06, helping the Scots to an undefeated regular season in 2005 and winning their first conference title since 1976. During his playing career, Monmouth registered a 34-7 overall record.
