Auburn football and head coach Alex Golesh showed interest in bringing back former running back Kam Martin to join the new-look coaching staff. However, Martin is going in another direction.
According to Doug Samuels of FootballScoop.com, Martin has agreed to join Mike Norvell’s staff at Florida State as running backs coach. He will reunite with FSU offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn, who coached Martin at Auburn and later hired Martin to serve as running backs coach at UCF for two seasons. Samuels reported earlier in the week that Florida State offered Martin the running backs coaching position, but that Golesh was also targeting him to join his staff on the Plains.
Martin has found success in just a few short years as a running backs coach. He led Marcus Cooper to a 1,436-yard rushing, 12-touchdown season in his first job at Incarnate Word in 2022. UCF running back RJ Harvey also rushed for 2,993 yards and 38 touchdowns in two seasons under Martin’s watch. Most recently, Dominic Richardson rushed for 1,065 yards and five touchdowns during Martin’s lone season at Tulsa.
So, who will lead Auburn’s running backs next season? The Tigers will turn to a familiar face in Larry Porter, who coached tight ends at Auburn under Malzahn from 2017-20. Porter has spent time at North Carolina and West Virginia since leaving Auburn in 2020, where he has coached the likes of Ty Chandler and Omarion Hampton, who produced 1,000-yard seasons under Porter’s care.
