Sinton's stellar playoff run ends one win shy of UIL state title game

KATY — Sinton had saved its best play for the second half throughout most of the playoffs, but West Orange-Stark proved to be an obstacle the Pirates could not overcome.

Sinton was playing in the Class 4A Division II state semifinals for the first time since 2014, but its postseason run came to an end after a 28-3 loss to to the Mustangs on Friday, Dec. 12 at Rhodes Memorial Stadium.

Led by running back Khelvy Jefferson, West Orange-Stark advanced to the state championship game next week at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

Sinton got on the board with a 24-yard field goal by Blake Bordelon, but Jefferson set the tone for the Mustangs with touchdown runs of 66 and 64 yards to help give West Orange-Stark a 21-3 halftime lead.

The Pirates came up with a fumble recovery by Marcos Zapata in the third quarter, but Sinton was unable to capitalize and the Mustangs went on to score two more touchdowns in the second half, including Jefferson’s third touchdown of the game on a 42-yard carry.

Sinton running back Mykha Green, who put together a memorable season with more than 3,300 rushing yards, ran for 110 yards in his final high school game.

Jefferon led West Orange-Stark with 16 caries for 241 yards and three touchdowns.
